<image:title>Men vs Women Depression - 2 in 10 women and 1 in 10 men experience depression.</image:title>
<image:caption>Women are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression. Hormones cause mood changes naturally in women. But depression is more than normal mood change. Contributing factors include the changes experienced during puberty, including increased school pressure, conflict with family, and emerging identity issues; premenstrual syndrome, life changes with pregnancy and postpartum issues, perimenopause and menopause. Other life circumstances unique to women can contribute to depression including unequal power and status, work overload and sexual or physical abuse.</image:caption>

<image:title>Do drugs help creativity? - Make it stand out.</image:title>
<image:caption>Romanticizing drug use as a pathway to creativity insults the discipline and hard work of being an artist. In our society, drug and alcohol abuse has become extremely normalized, if not romanticized. A common myth about artists and creative people is that they use drugs and alcohol in order to channel inspiration and make better art. While this may be true for some creators during some periods of their lives, drug and alcohol use is absolutely not essential to the creative process, and can be fatal to both the art and the artist. The myth that substances boost creativity is one that enables and normalizes substance abuse and addiction. Nearly one-third of all individuals who are diagnosed with a mental illness also struggle with a substance abuse issue on some level (National Alliance on Mental Illness). A considerable number of artists and creators struggle with mental health issues, which is where substance abuse and addiction can stem from. Many artists also cling to the idea that their substance of choice will make them successful, will promote their creativity, and will ultimately enhance their mental and emotional stability. First-hand anecdotes from artists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Eminem, and Jennifer Lopez are witness to the benefits of long-term sobriety on the creative process. We tend to glorify the artists who die young and tragically, while forgetting about the ones who keep creating, manage the stresses of public life, and continue their artistic journey of self-discovery.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibits - Mega BucketList - Mental Health</image:title>
<image:caption>Writing down a goal increases the likelihood you will achieve it. Mental health providers usually begin working with a patient by asking, “What would you like to achieve?” Studies have found that patients who set concrete, measurable goals are more likely to stay in treatment. Goals might be as simple as “I want to be able to fight less with my parents.” or “I want to be able to get up and get to school every day.” Setting goals can be used as part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to start the process of getting well and rebuilding a meaningful life. Goals are as individual as people. And “Hopes & Dreams” are just big-time goals. Sometimes, people experience a criss when the REACH a long-held goal - and then ask, “now what?” Think of Olympic athletes who win medals, but then have to find meaning in life after their peak athletic years. Or people who look forward to retirement, but have to find new activities to have structure in their lives.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mindfulness: a practice of formal meditation, OR any activity that helps you slow down and concentrate, to achieve “flow”. In our exhibit: Meditation tent, Coloring book pages, Lego blocks, Stressors and Strengths tiles, Mural art, Obelisk reflections. Emotional Awareness: being able to identify, name and discuss your feelings. In our exhibit: Mural art, Stressors and Strengths tiles, Obelisk reflections. Gratitude: making a daily gratitude list literally rewires the brain from a negative to positive outlook. In our exhibit: Thank-You cards, the “Bring Gratitude” deck (in small wooden box), Meditation tent. Community: the people you care about, and those who care about you. Humans are social animals. Having at least one close relationship dramatically improves mental health and longevity. In our exhibit: Experiencing the room with a group of classmates, family or friends helps initiate conversations that can bring people closer. The games and side-by-side activities are a low-stakes way to engage with other people.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibits - Artistories - Dying young? Not cool.</image:title>
<image:caption>What do those numbers mean? [Chorus] Listen up and I'll tell a story About an artist growing old Some would try for fame and glory Others aren't so bold Everyone, and friends and family Saying, "Hey! Get a job!" "Why do you only do that only? Why are you so odd? We don't really like what you do We don't think anyone ever will It's a problem that you have And this problem's made you ill." Listen up and I'll tell a story About an artist growing old Some would try for fame and glory Others aren't so bold The artist walks alone Someone says behind his back "He's got his gall to call himself that! He doesn't even know where he's at!" The artist walks among the flowers Appreciating the sun He does this all his waking hours But is it really so wrong? They sit in front of their TVs Saying, "Hey! This is fun!" And they laugh at the artist Saying, "He doesn't know how to have fun." The best things in life are truly free Singing birds and laughing bees "You've got me wrong", says he "The sun don't shine in your TV" Listen up and I'll tell a story About an artist growing old Some would try for fame and glory Others aren't so bold Everyone, and friends and family Saying, "Hey! Get a job!" "Why do you only do that only? Why are you so odd? We don't really like what you do We don't think anyone ever will It's a problem that you have And this problem's made you ill." [Chorus] Listen up and I'll tell a story About an artist growing old Some would try for fame and glory Others just like to watch the world</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibits - Obelisk Memorial - Less stigma, more story.</image:title>
<image:caption>Issues affect everyone differently. Unfortunately, there are still folks who view mental illness and substance use as moral problems rather than medical illnesses, despite years of research and evidence-based treatment. Yet these issues affect one in three Americans. This display is a safe space to share what is often silenced or held secret. Who in your life is affected by your actions and decisions? What communities are you part of? This is a both an ongoing memorial (Amos loved obelisks and orange road cones) and a data collection piece.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibits - Obelisk Memorial - A memorial. And a data visualization.</image:title>
<image:caption>Each color means something different. YELLOW for how your creativity has touched your life. ORANGE for how mental illness has touched your life. RED for how addiction has touched your life. GREEN in honor of someone struggling with an issue. BLUE in memory of someone you have lost.</image:caption>
